How is Autism Treated?

Part 1: The Medical Model

Due to the variability in cause and presentation, there is no one standard for how ASD is treated. Current therapy protocols focus on decreasing symptomology and developing abilities. Many therapies are focused on early intervention. It's important when developing treatment plans that the methods selected are based on presentation, not diagnosis, as ASD have many overlaps with other conditions, many co-morbidities, and is often misdiagnosed.

When identified in early childhood, many of these therapies may be used together. In some cases, a behavior therapist will work with an individual full time, observing them in all multiple environments like school, home, public spaces, et cetera.
