What Do People With Down Syndrome Want Others To Know?
1. Having Down syndrome doesn’t automatically make a person incapable of living a normal, happy, productive life. While some individuals may have deficiencies, the same can be said about any large grouping of people, and that does not define them or anyone else. Please don’t judge a book by its cover.
2. Down syndrome is not a burden, either to the person with it or the society around it. Most people with Down syndrome live happy lives full of friends and family, can date and get married, and are capable of holding jobs beyond just basic manual labor, and in many cases live independently.
3. Not everyone with Down syndrome looks the same. Despite there being some common physical characteristics that may develop as a part of the syndrome, overall someone with Down syndrome will look more like immediate family than an unrelated person with Down syndrome.
