Make Them Known:
Why it is important to display your pronouns
Lately it has been more and more common to see people displaying their pronouns in their bios and signatures. This habit started out as a necessity in trans spaces. A question often asked is, “why would I display my pronouns? I’m not trans.” There are multiple positive reasons to share your pronouns:
As a trans person, sharing your pronouns can often out you if you are the only one doing so.
By the majority taking up the habit, it can make it safer for a trans person to do so themself.Sharing your pronouns can also be a show of solidarity with the trans community and allyship.
Sharing your pronouns can help denormalize the assumption of gender based solely on appearances, which may not match the assumed standard.
Sharing your pronouns can open a dialogue that could allow you to be an ally and enlighten others.
It doesn’t cost you anything or harm you in any way to share your pronouns.
Sharing your pronouns can help make life just a little bit better for a marginalized group.
It’s fine if you are uncomfortable with sharing your pronouns as well. By splitting the difference between requiring everyone to list pronouns and no one doing so, it leaves a grey space for those that don’t want to share their pronouns because it could out them or they are unsure what the correct pronouns are for them. It doesn’t take everyone to improve things, so every little bit counts.
